Good afternoon, I by chance came across Coach Parnell's obituary today. I am 62, but at the age of 13 Coach Parnell was my PE teacher. He took PE to a new level. We played all sports, he taught us fishing skills in Newport Lake and during football season we watched film of the Greyhounds next opponent.
But most importantly he taught me a lesson that I have never forgotten. I was being a teenager and answered a question he asked with a "yeah". Teachers today would let that go but not Coach Parnell. He got down on one knee, looked me in the eye and told me that teachers and adults deserve respect. You answer with a Yes Sir or a No Sir.
That may be a small thing but it has stuck with me for almost 50 years. Though we moved from Newport when the shoe factory closed I have never forgotten that moment, that extra effort to make a difference. I have shared this lesson with each of my 3 sons as they grew up.
To the Parnell family, my sincere condolences. I just felt compelled to share this story and for you to know that your Dad, Brother, Uncle or Grandpa truly made a difference in my life. I am sure there are thousands of others that feel the same.
I pray for you to have peace in his passing.
Sincerely
Steve Graddy
