Obituary for James Summers, Jr.

James Summers, Jr.
James Doss “Bud” Summers, Jr., 73 of Jonesboro, Arkansas, passed away December 22, 2022 surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James “Buddy” Summers, Sr.; his mother, Jo (Fowler) Draper; his sister, Cindy Summers Canard; and his brother Billy Don Summers.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of the home; daughter Catherine Nichole Mann (Josh) of Jonesboro; son Scott Harrell of Newport; grandchildren Liam Bradley, Stella Mann, Wilder Mann, Abbie Harrell, Maddie Harrell, Kaylee Harrell and Cameron Duke; brother Michael Summers (Connie) of Jonesboro. Bud also leaves behind a close family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bud was born May 23, 1949, in Newport, Arkansas and was a proud graduate of Newport High School in 1967. After graduation, Bud embraced his wandering soul and spent many years traveling the Colorado Mountains to the California sun exploring a life he had previously only known by the musical lyrics that spoke to him. These would be his first steps in becoming a self-proclaimed “old hippie.”
A deep affection for plants would lead Bud to obtaining a degree in horticulture and growing a family in Conway. After several successful years in the botanical nursery industry, Bud and family relocated to Jonesboro to open Summers Truck Service, which he operated until he retired in 2014.
Bud enjoyed summers on the lake, good music, and breakfast; however, his greatest joys in life came from his family. Bud would often fondly reminisce of his childhood in Weldon and life on the road, but he was most fond of the memories he was making as a “Papa.” Bud’s unconditional love for his family was evident throughout his life and will forever be his legacy.
A memorial service will be held at the Tupelo Community Center in Tupelo, AR on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 1:00 pm to celebrate the life of a wandering soul who found his way home one last time. “Love you brother.”
