Obituary for Oneida Chapman

Oneida Chapman
Oneida (Hicks) Chapman of Little Rock, Arkansas, formerly of Newport, departed this life on January 21, 2023, at the age of 99. She was born November 16, 1923, in Bald Knob, the only child of Herbert and Pearl (Roasseau) Hicks.

Oneida graduated from Tuckerman High School, where she was Valedictorian of her class. She spent all her life in and around Jackson County until moving to Little Rock in her later years to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She and her husband, Stanley, were the owners/operators of theaters in Newark, Tuckerman and Swifton in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the last being the Swift Theater in Swifton. While living in Swifton, she also owned and managed Oneida’s Dress Shop, and she and Stanley owned/operated Stan’s Dairy Bar. After the family moved to Newport in 1973, Oneida worked for the Employment Security Division of the State of Arkansas. She later enjoyed working with her daughter, Tara, in the business office of GPW Nursing Home. Oneida was very involved in her local community, and especially enjoyed being an active member of the Newport Kiwanis Club, where she held every office during her membership, including a time as president of the Club. She was also a member of the Red Hat Association.

Oneida was an active member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ in Newport, and later the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Little Rock. She enjoyed sending cards to shut-ins and members of her church family. Oneida spent a great deal of time reading and studying her Bible and was active in spreading the gospel around the world through her involvement with World Bible School for many years.

After her move to Little Rock, she continued serving others as a member of the resident’s council at Brookdale Retirement Village, serving as a liaison and welcoming face to new residents to help them integrate into the retirement community.

Oneida lived life with a strong faith in God, a commitment to family, and a love for serving others. She loved wearing anything red, was never without earrings and a necklace, was never one to be shy or reserved. Oh, and she loved to go…..any time, any where!

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years – and the love of her life – Stanley Chapman, Sr.; and her parents.

Oneida was especially proud of her family, and always carried pictures of all of them in her wallet. She is survived by her two children; Stan Chapman, Jr., and wife, Robbie, of Little Rock, and Tara Byrd of Little Rock; six grandchildren, Chris Byrd and wife, Lisa, Traci Byrd, Blaze Taylor and husband, Landon, John Chapman and wife, Montana, Ellie Kate Chapman, and Josie Chapman; three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Byrd, Peyton Taylor, and Reese Taylor.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. January 23, 2023, at Walnut Grove Cemetery with Mr. Ted Knight officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the graveside service.

Honorary pallbearers: Chris Byrd, John Chapman, Nathaniel Byrd, Landon Taylor, Peyton Taylor, Marion King, Roy Byrd, and Marty Knight.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to honor Oneida can be made to the Paragould Children’s Home, 5515 Walcott Road, Paragould, AR 72450, or the charity of your choice.
